With 25 years of experience in executive-level public administration education, the School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA) at Rutgers University-Newark has developed the Global Executive Online Master of Public Administration (GEO•MPA).

As the first completely online executive international graduate degree, the GEO•MPA program consists of 30 credits of coursework that build management and leadership skills for advancing your career in government and the nonprofit sector. The two-year GEO•MPA executive master’s program is offered online simultaneously to executive-level student groups in New Jersey and regions around the world.

Core faculty members of SPAA administer the cutting-edge courses using innovative, technology-centered instructional techniques, while students engage with faculty and each other in a stimulating online learning environment. This innovative executive MPA degree program instills in students the critical capacities for both local and global strategic problem-solving and analytical assessment, while honing the cross-cultural leadership and technical skills necessary to meet the growing challenges of 21st century public and nonprofit leaders.

  • Admissions requirements
    • 7+ years of managerial experience in public or nonprofit sectors
    • Detailed resume
    • 3.0 GPA from prior degree at post-secondary institution (or GRE scores)
    • Official transcript from each post-secondary institution attended (bachelor’s degree from recognized institution required)
    • Three letters of recommendation (at least one from current employer or supervisor)
    • International students: minimum TOEFL score of 90 or IELTS score of 6.5

  • Program tuition, fees, and all course materials total approximately $26,000 for NJ in-state students and $40,000 for non-NJ residents, but employers often provide financial support
  • All newly admitted out-of-state students enrolled in the GEO•MPA program are eligible to receive a $5000 scholarship ($2,500 per year), but only for those who apply by July 1, 2017

  • When is the deadline to apply?
    The deadline to apply to the Global Executive Online Master of Public Administration (GEO•MPA) program for the fall semester is July 1. Applications are only being accepted for the fall semester.
  • What does a "global" MPA mean?
    • The GEO•MPA program is highly relevant for local and state administrators, but recognizes that we live in an increasingly interconnected world. We have designed the GEO•MPA program to help students learn from innovative practices in other countries and contexts. 
    • The GEO•MPA degree boasts both national and international accreditation.
  • What does an "executive" MPA mean?
    • The GEO•MPA program is built for the working professional: a part-time course load with no travel or commuting required. All courses are completed online in only two years.
    • The GEO•MPA program honors the professional experience of its students and, thus, requires the completion of only 10 courses (30 credits) to reach the degree.
  • How is the GEO•MPA different from the traditional Rutgers MPA? 
    • The GEO•MPA program is specifically designed for experienced administrators (rather than pre-professional or early career students) and as such requires a minimum of 7 years of managerial experience in the public or nonprofit sectors for admission.
    • The degree requires a completion of only 10 courses (30 credits), while the traditional MPA requires 14 courses.
    • The GEO•MPA program utilizes a cohort model, whereas the traditional MPA does not. Students will build a community of colleagues as they complete all courses in the GEO•MPA program with the same group.
    • The program is built specifically for working professionals with a completely online, part-time course load format.
