Masters in Public Health (MPH)

SPAA collaborates with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMNDNJ) in offering a Masters in Public Health (MPH) degree through the UMDNJ School of Public Health (SPH). In this collaboration, SPAA provides administrative, teaching and advising support for the Department of Urban Health Administration (URHA) on the Newark campus of the UMDNJ SPH. URHA classes emphasize hands on, case method and other practical learning experiences designed to prepare students to assume managerial and leadership positions in public, nonprofit and private organizations whose work contributes to improved health for urban, disadvantaged population. Upon graduation, a student with the MPH degree in Urban Health Administration will be able to:

  • Identify the main issues that affect the organization, financing, and delivery of health services, and public health systems in urban communities, especially among disadvantaged populations;
  • Apply quality improvement principles and methods to enhance health outcomes and the performance and productivity of health organizations;
  • Apply leadership skills to health partnerships, coalition building, and nonprofit organizations;
  • Demonstrate skills in program planning, development, and evaluation in organizational and urban community settings;
  • Utilize cultural sensitivity, budgeting, human resource management, and program development skills in health care, nonprofit, and public service settings; and
  • Apply the fundamental elements of health service research to the analysis of psychosocial, economic, and clinical outcomes.

The course of study for the URHA includes l5 credits of core courses, 12 credits of required classes and a minimum of 12 elective credits. The required and elective classes are offered primarily at the Rutgers SPAA, though students may also select electives from other departments at RU or UMDNJ. Upon the completion of their course work, students concentrating in URHA will complete a 400 hour fieldwork placement consistent with the emphasis on urban health administration.
