Graduate Profile: Carla Stinson (MPA '17)

Hometown: Rahway, NJ
Degree program: Master of Public Administration

Why did you enroll at SPAA?
I enrolled in SPAA to obtain a better understanding of state and federal policies that govern day-to-day operations. Building on the knowledge that I learn, I want to develop policies and regulations that provide public value. Both personally and professionally, I want to raise the bar, look to achieve greatness, and make tomorrow better. “My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.”- Maya Angelou

What do you hope to accomplish with your degree?
I want to make a difference particularly in the health and human services industry. I would like to be an integral part of policy development and its implementation. I believe that you have to be the change you want to see and it starts with me.

Best moments at Rutgers University-Newark?
Presenting my thesis. This moment embodied everything that I worked so hard for. In that moment, all the sleepless nights and worrying about school were a distant memory. Anything worth having is worth the hard work. I couldn’t be happier that I achieved such a milestone.

Favorite class(es) and professor(s)?
Dr. Dominic Novelli for "Public Budgeting" and "Technology and Public Administration," and Dr. Stephanie Newbold for "Human Resource Administration." Dr. Novelli and Dr. Newbold- provided real -world examples and demonstrated a vested interest in the success of their students. Their approach to teaching propelled learning far beyond the textbooks. You are a true testament to excellence. Thank you, Dr. Novelli and Dr. Newbold.

Biggest challenge?
Pursing my master's degree after seven years of graduating with my bachelor's. I now had a full-time career and I was taking on such a big responsibility. I retrained myself on how to be a student and effectively manage my time. I pride myself on having a strong work ethic and doing everything with excellence and I wanted to make sure I maintained that momentum. After a semester of classes, I developed a balanced routine where I was able to focus on both my career and school.

Next steps?
I look forward to being inducted into the Public Administration Honors Society and attending the commencement ceremony. Thereafter, I will put what I have learned into action. I look forward of what’s to come. I am so fortunate to have had the experiences I have encountered. I vow to always serve the public with respect, dignity, and provide public value. Thank you Rutgers and the School of Public Administration for giving me the tools to achieve my dreams and help make the world a better place.

Advice to incoming students?
You have made the right decision. Rutgers and the School of Public Affairs and Administration will provide you with the industry knowledge you need to succeed. Use every moment to learn. Ask questions and take an active part in your learning.
