VIEW: BRIDGES Magazine Volume 1 Issue 2

This issue of BRIDGES highlights what community engagement looks like when it is treated not as a program or initiative, but as a shared institutional commitment.

Across these pages, a common thread emerges: meaningful change happens through partnership. Whether through Rutgers–Newark’s renewed Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, the launch of the Next Generation Leadership Academy, CHECE’s community-driven research symposium, or Community Engagement Day projects across Newark, each story reflects the same guiding principle — knowledge becomes most powerful when created and applied alongside communities.

This issue also reminds us that community engagement takes many forms: preparing students for public leadership, supporting local organizations, advancing health equity, creating pathways for dialogue, or amplifying the voices and experiences of residents whose expertise too often goes unrecognized. It is found in classrooms, research partnerships, volunteer sites, policy discussions, and everyday relationships built on trust and reciprocity.

We are grateful to the faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community partners whose work continues to build bridges between the university and the communities we serve.
