For the second year in a row, Rutgers SPAA associate professor Cleopatra Charles had the opportunity to lead a study abroad program in Saint Lucia on managing international NGOs with a group of Rutgers University undergraduate students during Spring Break. She shared her thoughts on the experience:

This incredible course comes at a particularly timely moment, as the nonprofit sector faces increasing scrutiny and challenges globally. With attacks on the sector’s legitimacy, funding restrictions, and shifting political landscapes, it is more important than ever to equip students with the knowledge and tools to understand, support, and advocate for the crucial work of these organizations. By engaging directly with nonprofit leaders, students were able to see both the resilience and the obstacles that NGOs navigate daily. These interactions provided an unfiltered look at the realities of working in the nonprofit sector and inspired students to think critically about solutions for global issues.

There’s something uniquely powerful about stepping outside the lecture hall and into the real world. Global learning is an essential part of education, and opportunities like these equip students with the skills and perspectives needed to become informed, engaged, and impactful global citizens. I look forward to seeing how this experience shapes their future endeavors and to returning next year for another transformative journey!

Beyond the academic and professional insights, this program was deeply transformative on a personal level. Students not only expanded their knowledge but also developed a global mindset, cultural sensitivity, and a deeper appreciation for the impact of community-driven initiatives. For many, this experience solidified their interest in international development, nonprofit management, or public policy, shaping their academic and career aspirations.

Of course, the experience wasn’t all work! Students had the chance to explore the natural beauty of Saint Lucia, visiting the famous Sulphur Springs, marveling at the iconic Pitons, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs. These moments of adventure and relaxation added another layer of enrichment, allowing students to appreciate the cultural and natural wonders of the island.

Conquering history and heights! Rutgers students reach the summit of Fort Rodney at Pigeon Island, taking in breathtaking views while exploring Saint Lucia’s rich past.

Empowering women, transforming agriculture! Rutgers students visit Helen’s Daughters, learning how this inspiring nonprofit is advancing economic justice for rural women in the Caribbean. From sustainable farming to market access, HD is breaking barriers and creating opportunities!

Exploring education and innovation! Rutgers students visit Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, engaging with local educators and gaining insights into higher education in Saint Lucia. A great opportunity for cross-cultural learning and collaboration!
