Carina Bontia (BA'24)

Name: Carina Bontia
Hometown: Cebu, Philippines
BA Grad Month/Year: January 2024
Current Position/Organization: Graduate Coordinator at the Office of Global Initiatives and Experiential Learning, Rutgers University–Newark

Why did you enroll at SPAA?
I always wanted to be part of organizations working to protect the environment and make a positive impact in communities. By the time I learned about SPAA, I was already working for a grassroots nonprofit in Newark and thought it would be practical for me to pursue this degree. A colleague from my community college introduced me to the program and convinced me it was worth trying out!

What do you hope to accomplish with your degree?
I hope to one day create my own organization that teaches environmentally friendly farming methods, implements reforestation projects, and aids in the preservation of natural resources. Growing up in the Philippines, I witnessed the struggles of my home country frequently devastated by natural disasters due to global warming and poor infrastructure. Understanding the inner workings of nonprofits, I’m hoping I will be able to facilitate change and alleviate some of the problems farmers face in my country.

Favorite SPAA memory and/or most meaningful experience at SPAA?
While I don’t have a favorite memory or something I could identify as my most meaningful experience, there are plenty of things I am grateful for. SPAA staff and faculty have been very supportive throughout my academic career, from helping me organize my classes to encouraging my professional development pursuits. I especially enjoyed the thought-provoking lectures from the teaching staff, being around classmates with lots of experience in the field, and learning from nonprofit leaders through virtual panel events organized by SPAA.

Biggest challenge(s)?
The biggest challenge for me was balancing school, work, and family responsibilities. However, I don’t think I would have done well in my SPAA classes had I not worked at the same time. My experience working for different nonprofits while in school made it easier for me to relate to and understand the topics discussed in class.

Next steps?
My next steps are to complete my MPA and possibly teach at a university in my home island!

Advice to incoming students?
Use your time in school to pursue professional development opportunities, such as internships or volunteering. Both options are helpful with obtaining experience, exploring the nonprofit or public sector, and exposing yourself to a network of professionals.
