SPAA Graduate Profile: Jessalyn Chang (MPA'24)
Name: Jessalyn Chang
Hometown: Summit, New Jersey
MPA Grad Month/Year: May 2024
Why did you enroll at SPAA?
As a former corporate executive, I wanted to learn about public and nonprofit business and felt a Master of Public Administration was an appropriate avenue to develop skills and knowledge in this field.
What do you hope to accomplish with your degree?
I hope to use what I learned in all the courses and about myself to secure a position in a nonprofit organization where I can do policy research and design and be an effective contributor to the community.
Favorite SPAA memory and/or most meaningful experience at SPAA?
I enjoyed interacting with my fellow students and learning about the various positions they hold in government and nonprofits. I really admire their dedication to "doing good," which contrasts sharply with the goals and objectives in the corporate arena.
Biggest challenge(s)?
Juggling homework assignments was a challenge at first, as well as using unfamiliar technology. Building my own website was daunting at first, but after the initial period of doubt, it was quite rewarding.
Next steps?
I am in the process of applying to positions at nonprofits to hopefully make contributions in data analysis and policy research and design.
Advice to incoming students?
No matter what age you are or what experience you've had previously, it is never too late to pursue a different career path; one that excites and motivates you and inspires you to produce your best work.
