Bio

Steven Paul Sala has been a steady and welcoming presence at Rutgers University–Newark for the past 17 years, including 11 years as the resident security officer at the School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA). For more than three decades in public education and four years as a legal assistant, Steven has built a reputation that is grounded in dedication, reliability, and service to others.

Known for his exceptional sense of organization and duty, Steven does far more than ensure the safety of the SPAA building. He creates an environment that is warm, inviting, and community-centered. Whether carefully tending to the plants throughout the building, greeting everyone with kindness, or thoughtfully decorating the front desk to celebrate holidays and national observances, Steven brings a spirit of care to SPAA each day. From pumpkins during Thanksgiving, to flags for Memorial Day, to festive lights during the holiday season, his attention to detail and commitment to making others feel welcome have become a cherished part of the school’s culture.

Steven lives in Bayonne with his wife of nearly 40 years, Liwei (“Cindy”). Together they have raised two children, Steven and Amy, and are proud grandparents to three young grandchildren. A basketball player in his younger years, Steven continues to stay intellectually engaged through reading, watching
Jeopardy!, spending time with his grandchildren, and helping anyone in need of support.

Through his quiet leadership, consistency, and genuine care for others, Steven exemplifies the values of competence, diversity, service, ethics, and knowledge that strengthen Rutgers SPAA every day.
