Why did you enroll at SPAA?
Ever since I was young, I knew I wanted to work in public service, but I wasn’t always sure what that would look like. Even when I started at Rutgers University, I was still figuring out how I wanted to make a difference. That’s what led me to the School of Public Affairs and Administration (SPAA), where I could explore my interests while gaining the skills to serve others and grow into a future leader in the public or nonprofit sector.

What do you hope to accomplish with your degree?
I hope to work full-time as a Legislative Assistant for a member of Congress or in the New Jersey Legislature, with a focus on education policy. In the long term, I aspire to run for my local Board of Education and continue advocating for students and equitable access to quality education.

Favorite SPAA memory and/or most meaningful experience at SPAA?
One of my most meaningful experiences at SPAA was taking the “U.S. and Global Urban Experience” course alongside my fellow SPAA classmates. It was a really fun experience brainstorming solutions to the issues we are currently facing in our communities. It was really enlightening to see how we are all connected, even though we all come from different places.

Biggest challenge(s)?
As a first-generation college student, I encountered many of the same challenges faced by other students. I lacked someone to guide me or advise me on the next steps in my education and career. My biggest struggle was time management, along with the constant feeling that I was not doing enough during my time in college.

Next steps?
I was awarded the Rutgers Eagleton Washington Scholarship. I plan to intern on the Hill this summer and develop my skills in public speaking, research, and problem-solving.

Advice to incoming students?
“Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.” Never let anyone, including yourself, prevent you from applying to different opportunities. Alternatively, explore different options. Seize every opportunity the university offers, and savor every moment.
