Application for Degree Candidacy

All graduating students must adhere to the application for cadidacy deadline dates for the May degree date.

Undergraduate Candidates:

  • The application for candidacy and and all other requirements (i.e. electronic submission for doctoral students, etc.) must be completed by the deadline date.

Caps and Gowns

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the Rutgers University-Newark Bookstore in Bradley Hall.

To preorder your cap and gown go to Once you have completed the order you will receive an email confirmation. Students who are uncertain if they will attend should still place an order. Gowns that are not picked up will be returned. There is no fee to preorder. Preorders are only accepted online until mid-March. If you do not preorder your gown, you will be able to purchase a gown from the Rutgers University-Newark Bookstore in Bradley Hall starting in late April.

Public Administration Masters Hood:

Please visit the Rutgers-Newark Bookstore in Bradley Hall to order a rental gown or purchase a custom gown. All rentals must be paid for in full when ordering. Custom gowns require a deposit of 50% to process the order.

Financial Obligations

Students with outstanding financial obligations after May 1 will NOT receive their diplomas on commencement day.

Pi Alpha Alpha Honor Society

Students who have a cumulative GPA of 3.85 (Masters and PhD) or 3.5 (undergraduate) at the end of the Fall 2016 semster will be invited by SPAA to join Pi Alpha Alpha, the National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration. Students are inducted at the SPAA Award Ceremony.

Pi Alpha Alpha (PAA), the National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration, recognizes outstanding graduate as well as undergraduate students in public administration, public policy, and public affairs. The purpose of Pi Alpha Alpha is to encourage and recognize outstanding scholarship and accomplishment in public affairs and administration. Its objectives, such as fostering integrity, professionalism, and effective performance, promote the advancement of quality in the education and practice of the art and science of public affairs and administration. PAA membership identifies those with the highest performance levels in educational programs preparing them for public service careers. Students who meet these standards will be invited to join Pi Alpha Alpha.

Alumni Organizations

SPAA Alumni Network (SPAAAN)
Graduates are welcome to join the School of Public Affairs and Administration Alumni Network (SPAAAN), which holds events and sponsors other activities. Networking with alumni is also a great way to advance your career. Please join the moderated SPAA Alumni Listserv.

In addition, SPAA alumni stay in touch through SPAA's LinkedIn group.

Rutgers University Alumni Association
The Rutgers University Alumni Association serves all alumni of Rutgers University. The purpose of the association is to advance the best interests and well being of Rutgers University by engaging all alumni in the life of the institution through communication, programming, services, and volunteer opportunities. Membership in the RUAA is free and automatically granted to all graduates of Rutgers University, or any of its predecessor schools, upon graduation.
